Waste Management Perspectives for Egypt

Waste Management Perspectives for Egypt | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
Egypt occupies 7th position in the list of countries with the most mismanaged plastic waste, according to a recent report published in Science magazine. The report was based on data collected in 20...
The Organic Stream's insight:

Great article, focusing strongly on the Zabbaleen and their incredible recycling system.

"Believing the zabbaleen's system to be backwards and unhygienic, in 2003, the government sold contracts to three multinational companies (and one local company) to collect Cairo's waste, pushing the zabbaleen out of the system. "

The result of this action and the backtracking of the government (who now officially employ the Zabbaleen) is a perfect example of how effective localised door-to-door waste collection can be.

If you're interested in learning more, why not listen to our podcast episode with Mal Williams on his trip to visit the Zabbaleen community in Cairo.

RI Composting Law Now Official, But Weak - ecoRI news

RI Composting Law Now Official, But Weak - ecoRI news | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it

The initial version of the bill required composting for all institutions by 2021. But after opposition from restaurants and school groups, the compliance threshold was reduced to a smaller pool of institutions — those that generate 2 tons or more of organic waste per week. Several exemptions also were added, such as a “fair-price” provision that allows institutions to opt out if it’s cheaper to ship food scrap to the landfill. K-12 public schools also are exempted.

The Organic Stream's insight:

"Walsh and other speakers said the delayed start will give farms and other organic-management facilities time to open to the public."

Things may be moving slow, but they are moving in the right direction. Change can take time, and a slow start can give people more time to readjust to the new system.

UK Must Embrace Organic Waste to Hit Recycling Targets – ISWA Blog

UK Must Embrace Organic Waste to Hit Recycling Targets – ISWA Blog | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
ISWA President, David Newman argues that the UK must look at best practice for organic waste management if it is to significantly increase recycling rates.
The Organic Stream's insight:

"Also, the dismissal by some speakers of the very idea of a landfill ban on organics, which has worked excellently in driving composting and AD elsewhere in Europe, shows the key limitations to non-market driven solutions to UK waste management thinking.  Yet everyone was concerned recycling rates in the UK have remained flat for the last three years at around 43%- without organic waste, it will be hard to improve this."

Lichfield and Tamworth stop collecting food waste.

Lichfield and Tamworth stop collecting food waste. | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
Lichfield District Council and Tamworth Borough Council stop accepting food waste in organics bins due to costs.
The Organic Stream's insight:

Bad news from the UK. Only 20% of people used their compost bins, therefore the council decided it was not a cost effective option. 20% participation rate is quite low - perhaps there were possibilities to increase the numbers?

Most worryingly, the council is advising people to wrap their food waste in newspaper or additional bin bags in order to combat odour and maggots.

A new business makes composting convenient - New Paltz Times

A new business makes composting convenient - New Paltz Times | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
New Paltz Times A new business makes composting convenient New Paltz Times Or is there another step in the process — table-to-farm, so to speak — where the remains of dinner are taken back to the farm to be composted and turned into soil in order...
The Organic Stream's insight:

It's great to see a successful business model for small-scale composting - even in its early stages. Charging a fee of 20 USD a month for residential collection is a bit of an ask, but owner Eileen Banrya hopes people will see the value of composting their food scraps rather than throwing into a landfill.

In a similar vein, from our conversation with long-time community composter David Buckel in NYC, it seems that there are more and more people thinking of ways to turn small-scale composting programs into a business to become self-sustaining and create jobs for the local community.

WISErg's
The Organic Stream's insight:

Interesting system designed for grocery stores and the food industry in the US which recycles organic materials and can track what kinds of food, and just how much of that food, is being wasted.

Tracking the food and quantities could also help in better management and planning that cuts down on these unnecessary wastes at the retail level.

"New food scraps separation rules coming to Metro Vancouver businesses, apartments"

The Organic Stream's insight:

"As generators of organic waste we know this is the right thing to do to get it out of landfills," he said. "But you can't just impose these costs on 6,000 restaurants without having a really sensitive perspective on their economics."

Businesses find cash in composting organic trash - Dubuque Telegraph Herald

Businesses find cash in composting organic trash - Dubuque Telegraph Herald | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
MILWAUKEE -- Melissa Tashjian was saving money to remodel her kitchen. She bought a dump truck instead.
The Organic Stream's insight:

Interesting article highlighting a number of successful compost businesses in the US. It states that once cities adopt city-wide collection programs, it can undercut the viability of small, entrepreneurial ventures.

This is a legitimate concern and David Buckle echoed a similar sentiment in our Community Composting podcast episode. Will large-scale organics collection programs threaten small-scale operations, and is this a cause for concern?

Preston (UK) to withdraw food waste collections in 2015

Preston (UK) to withdraw food waste collections in 2015 | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
Preston City Council’s cabinet agrees to discontinue the city’s food waste collection service in a bid to reduce costs.
The Organic Stream's insight:

This is an unfortunate step backwards for Preston. The main reason for the change once again is cost - the council could apparently save £90,000 by collecting organics mixed with residual waste and sending it to a mechanical biological treatment facility.

French MPs propose forcing supermarkets to hand over all unsold food to charity - Telegraph | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
Group of French MPs want to make it compulsory for all big supermarkets to donate all unsold but still edible food to charities
The Organic Stream's insight:

Additionaly: "Officials of the European Commission recently tabled proposals to allow national governments to extend the list of foods that do not require best-before dates, in a move which they believe will mean 15 million tons less food a year is discarded by households wrongly worried that it is no longer fit for consumption."

Composting in Qatar

Composting in Qatar | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
Qatar has one of the highest per capita waste generation rates worldwide.
The Organic Stream's insight:

Interesting article on what's going on in Qatar in relation to recycling and organics recycling. Over 90% of waste goes to landfill, while at the same time Qatar has one of the largest composting facilities in the world. There is great potential!

For a little more insight into the state of organics recycling in Qatar, check out our episode of The Organic Stream with Daniel Mitroussidis and his work in helping businesses manage their organic wastes.
