Alameda County: Troubling trend in recycling food waste

Alameda County: Troubling trend in recycling food waste | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
Something strange has happened inside Alameda County garbage cans, and it has sounded an alarm for those working against climate change.
The Organic Stream's insight:

"It could be people are suffering from food waste fatigue," Wolff said. "They may think, 'I've been doing this for a year, it kind of smells, and I'm tired of it.'"

An interesting case for us to consider in the organics collection world. Why exactly have residents slowly stopped recycling their organics at home, and what can we do to encourage them to keep it up long-term?

Whatever the answers, it's a clear sign that public awareness and education of the benefits of organics recycling needs to keep going beyond the first few years - it's a message that needs repeating again and again to keep it fresh in everyone's mind!

The Organic Stream's insight:

Very interesting report focusing solely on composting of food scraps by the  Illinois Food Scrap Coalition. Take a look!

Organic Waste Management Course | OrganicStream.org

Organic Waste Management Course | OrganicStream.org | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
The Organic Stream Video Course teaches new-generation organic waste management via free classes designed for municipalities & agriculture worldwide
The Organic Stream's insight:

Dear friends,

It’s our great pleasure to introduce the sixth lesson of our online course on Organic Waste Management.

Lesson 6: Evaluating Composting Best Practices: How to?
In this lesson, we review the most common composting processes that are used around the globe by gardeners, communities, farms and commercial facilities. There are many parameters to consider when deciding which composting process to opt for. Rather than recommending solutions, this lesson will teach you how to evaluate which composting systems are suitable for your particular program.

We would like to thank Kollvik recycling, European Composting Systems and Resource Recovery Australia for making this lesson possible.

We invite you to connect with us if you have any questions. If you haven’t registered for the course yet, you can request an invitation here.

Happy learning!
The Team at The Organic Stream

UK Must Embrace Organic Waste to Hit Recycling Targets – ISWA Blog

UK Must Embrace Organic Waste to Hit Recycling Targets – ISWA Blog | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
ISWA President, David Newman argues that the UK must look at best practice for organic waste management if it is to significantly increase recycling rates.
The Organic Stream's insight:

"Also, the dismissal by some speakers of the very idea of a landfill ban on organics, which has worked excellently in driving composting and AD elsewhere in Europe, shows the key limitations to non-market driven solutions to UK waste management thinking.  Yet everyone was concerned recycling rates in the UK have remained flat for the last three years at around 43%- without organic waste, it will be hard to improve this."

European Commission - Environment - Europeans call for less waste

European Commission - Environment - Europeans call for less waste | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
Do you recycle regularly? Do you avoid wasteful products? Most European citizens sort their rubbish for recycling at least some of the time, and they think their country produces too much waste.

Shocking levels of food waste in Kenya caused by standard practices of European and UK retailers - FOOD WASTE FEAST AT TEDX NAIROBI (2014 event)

Shocking levels of food waste in Kenya caused by standard practices of European and UK retailers - FOOD WASTE FEAST AT TEDX NAIROBI (2014 event) | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it

The Feedback team has uncovered shocking levels of food waste in Kenya caused by standard practices of European and UK retailers. Farmers are faced with overly restrictive cosmetic standards on the appearance of produce and have orders cancelled at the last minute and often after the produce has been flown in to Europe. Many small farmers end up bearing the financial cost of these practices, suffering significant hardship as a result.

The Organic Stream's insight:

"As the retailers do not pay for any of the costs of this waste, they have little incentive to reduce it, and farmers are forced to cover the cost of the fertilizer, agricultural inputs and labour for large harvests they cannot sell. One Kenyan farmer called this ‘psychological torture’ for the farm workers."

As much as we concentrate on food waste in the home, it is just as vital to consider pre-consumer wastage when talking about making a real impact. Unfair trading practices (in this instance European practices) play a massive role in the food waste crisis, and no substantial progress can be made without addressing these issues.

Mandatory community-based curbside composting service requires citizens to pay for composting

Mandatory community-based curbside composting service requires citizens to pay for composting | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
The next evolution of trash services requires citizens in some Colorado cities to pay for composting services.
The Organic Stream's insight:

Lafayette city in Colorado USA is beginning their mandatory composting service. A city-wide mandatory service will often experience some backlash, as evidenced here in this (slightly negative) report - and it is interesting to understand both how the topic is being framed, and people's concerns regarding mandatory composting.

Cost is of course a big factor, but the fact that there is no option to opt-out seems to be the central cause of frustration among some residents. Lafayette's Public Works Director does explain that recycling food waste will reduce the general waste volume and allow people to downsize their trash cart, but perhaps this is still not clear to all residents.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Lafayette, and we hope the city's composting program will be successful.

The Business Of Community Composting In USA « BioCycle

The Business Of Community Composting In USA « BioCycle | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it

"Community-scale composting is often perceived as having limits to its processing capacity, growth, equipment use, etc. Increasingly, however, these composters and collection enterprises have developed innovations to provide their service to as many members of their community that wish to engage with them, no matter the size of that community. This article highlights three innovative companies that have developed tools to enhance their businesses’ ability to service more generators, divert larger quantities of organics, engage more citizens and, overall, help make their communities more resilient."

The Organic Stream's insight:

Interesting to see the many different ways community composters have established themselves, and the innovations taking place - particularly the web-based aps developed by Community Composting in NYC.

First Closed-Loop Organics Waste Management System in North America Moves Forward

First Closed-Loop Organics Waste Management System in North America Moves Forward | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
Iris Solutions has been selected by the city of Surrey to build the Surrey Biofuels Processing Facility project in Canada. According to the city, once the biofuel processing facility is operational, Surrey will be home to th...
The Organic Stream's insight:

Promising project underway in Surrey, Canada. Surrey has already set us a curbside organics collection scheme, which has led to a 40% reduction in materials going to landfill.

We're happy to see they will be producing a compost product along with biogas, as sustainable organics recycling must see carbon being returned to the soil.

The economic benefits that Surrey has enjoyed from organic diversion alone are worth mentioning too. Annual savings in Surrey’s waste collection costs are $3 million, and they save $2 million a year from Annual savings from organic versus garbage disposal. (from Department of Surrey Engineering Department's PCP National Measures Report 2012 webinar).
