pretty gruesome and eye opening picture of what is going on in the oceans we live in. This plastic killed the bird that thought it was food but this goes well beyond the birds and fish in the present. The future will be a scary place because this will kill plenty of the fish and birds and cause catastrophic problems in our ecosystem. Humans will have a harder time eating food in the future if we don't clean some of this stuff up.

UNEP to Companies: Report Plastic Use · Environmental Management & Energy News · Environmental Leader

UNEP to Companies: Report Plastic Use · Environmental Management & Energy News · Environmental Leader | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it

"The total natural capital cost of plastic in the consumer goods industry is more than $75 billion per year, according to research released today by the Plastic Disclosure Project, the UN Environment Programme and natural capital analysts Trucost.

The cost comes from a range of environmental impacts including the harm done by plastic litter to wildlife in the ocean and the loss of resources when plastic waste is sent to landfill rather than being recycled."

The Organic Stream's insight:

Report shows that levels of disclosure on plastic is very low. While there is currently no correlation between disclosure rates and amount of plastic used, it is safe to say that measuring plastic use will enable companies to manage this usage more effectively, and create possibilities in reducing plastic use.

Plasticity 2014 to take place in New York City June 24.
The Organic Stream's insight:

"Topics at this year’s forum will focus on “innovation and collaboration in a material world,” and “innovations and scalable solutions for plastic, creating a world without the footprint,” according to Doug Woodring of the Ocean Recovery Alliance, one of the organizers and founder of the event."

Finding solutions for plastic is important as it has become such an integral part of our systems. However, alongside this discussion should be a serious debate on how to reduce or stop completely our dependence on plastic in the first place.

Even Composting Comes With Sticker Shock - New York Times

Even Composting Comes With Sticker Shock - New York Times | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it

"The most bedeviling problem for the company that turns most of the Puget Sound region’s kitchen waste into compost is on a piece of fruit. Almost every piece of fruit.

It’s that little sticker that tells you whether the fruit, and many kinds of vegetables, are organic, where they came from and which code a supermarket cashier should punch into the cash register."

The Organic Stream's insight:

Fruit stickers are a particular nuisance for composters - and we can see why. They're small and difficult to spot.

Quite interested in Cedar Grove's solution to the problem - encouraging people to collect the stickers for prizes!

Surprise: Biodegradable plastic bags usually aren't | Recycling News Channel | OrganicStream.org | Scoop.it
"Oxodegradable" is the latest iffy marketing term for plastic bags.
The Organic Stream's insight:

The confusion around biodegradable, compostable, and bioplastics plays right into the hands of those who would participate in greenwashing, and also makes it difficult for those handling the plastics on the ground to have full confidence in the regulations.

While we have various standards in place (in Europe and in the USA), there are calls for more stringent regulations and an end to greenwashing and contamination.

For an introduction to the issues at hand and the current situation for both municipalities and composting sites dealing with these plastics, listen to episode 24 of The Organic Stream.
