 “Every poll shows that Californians strongly support the law, and the $30 million to $50 million it will cost the plastics industry to launch a full-fledged campaign in 2016 will be proven to be an act of political malpractice, particularly since nearly half the state will no longer have plastic bags by election day.”


People are in favour of a ban and are aware of the dangers of plastic for our environment. The plastics industry are swimming against the tide!

Jose Manuel Barroso and his Secretary-General of the EU Commission Catherine Day have blocked an internal communication proposing an action plan to reduce food waste. According to Green Belgian MEP Bart Staes, burying the internal communication entitled "Building a Sustainable European Food System” was ‘a cynical war on common sense’ from the side of the Commission.

"...a spokesman for the Commission, said: "This is a classic Bart Staes Commission-bashing. President Barroso has taken this decision because it was felt that in the little time left --that is six weeks before the end of its mandate--, this Commission could not take such a major initiative and has decided to leave it for the next college.”


"This is not true”, Bart Staes told New Europe. “The paper was ready and presented for the first time in the Commission already end of April. It could have been adopted in spring, but they buried it already then.”

In light of this controversy, Zero Waste Europe are to hold a workshop in Brussels next month (March 4th) to provide proof of the economic, social and environmental benefits of having an ambitious waste policy.
